(JACKSONVILLE) A mindset on college starting as young as Kindergarten, but not just any college, Cameron Frazier is starting his own elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida so he can help put kids on a path to one day attend a Historically Black College or university.
“The vision behind Becoming Collegiate Academy is to provide each student with the HBCU experience,” said Frazier. “And that experience is the experience of community, of excellence, of love. The experience of having your identity affirmed every single day.”
While still in the planning stages, Frazier expects to open in the fall of 2022. He’ll offer kindergarten and first grade to nearly 200 students, eventually expanding to K through 5.
“The HBCU culture is infused throughout,” said Frazier. “And the reason why is when I graduated from high school, nobody told me about the great work, the history of the legacy of historically black colleges and universities.”
“Edwards Waters University, formerly known as Edwards Waters College, is actually the first HBCU in the state of Florida,” said Frazier. “A lot of history here, I love this institution, I love this campus.”
“I was a first-generation college student, he was a first-generation college student so we leaned on each other a lot,” said Audrieanna Burgin, Board Member.
The good news, Cameron is not alone in his belief that the HBCU atmosphere can be beneficial. Burgin, a professor, who’s known Frazier since undergrad school, is among the many from Jacksonville who believe in his vision.
“Our founding principles are based on research, belonging, and growth. The fact is that when a student is given a rigorous curriculum in a loving, nurturing environment, you are able to build the intellectual, social and skills,” said Burgin.
Burgin has a background in curriculum building and data assessment, and is helping to shape what the school will become.
“A lot of us are from Jacksonville, born and raised,” said Burgin. “This is an opportunity for us to really come into our community and really make a difference.”
